Vote 100 event in Lewes

An event to celebrate the centenary of the women’s suffrage movement will be held in Lewes on 9 July 2018.

One hundred years ago, the Representation of the People Act gave some women over the age of 30 the vote for the first time and marked the start of the movement that campaigned for the right of every woman to vote.

Lewes District Council is organising an event to encourage women to make their voices heard and to increase the number of women in local government.

Special guest speakers will talk about the role of women in public life and workshops will be held on what it is like to be a female councillor, how you can get involved in local government, confidence building and assertiveness, speaking in public and influencing decisions.

Councillor Elayne Merry, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for People and Performances, said: “Thankfully the rights of women have come a long way since 1918 but we still need to encourage more women to have a voice and get involved in local government. I hope that events like this will help women find out what being a councillor is all about and go a small way to empowering more women to speak out.”

The free event, will be held in Pelham House, Lewes, from 4pm to 7.30pm. Booking is essential as spaces are limited. A light buffet will be provided.
