Peacehaven Town Council is seeking the views of local residents, visitors and the wider community on the King George V Meridian Monument.
Located on the Prime Meridian Line, the monument is an important historic marker and a distinctive part of Peacehaven’s heritage.
The Council is considering options for the monument’s restoration and future presentation. Your views will help inform decisions about how this historic landmark can be preserved and enjoyed for years to come.
The Monument's History
An early Peacehaven resident realised that Peacehaven lay on the Greenwich Meridian Line, so, along with other members of the then Parish Council, it was agreed to mark its position. Funds were raised from the public to pay the £300 costs, and the Monument was unveiled on 8th August 1936, where local VIPs were invited to the official opening, which was introduced by the Astronomer Royal.
The Meridian Monument marks the point on the South Coast where the Greenwich Meridian enters and exits the country, and is one of several to mark the Meridian Line.
