Peacehaven Town Council is seeking the views of local residents, visitors and the wider community on the King George V Meridian Monument.
Located on the Prime Meridian Line, the monument is an important historic marker and a distinctive part of Peacehaven’s heritage.
The Council is considering options for the monument’s restoration and future presentation. Your views will help inform decisions about how this historic landmark can be preserved and enjoyed for years to come.
The Monument’s History
An early Peacehaven resident realised that Peacehaven lay on the Greenwich Meridian Line, so, along with other members of the then Parish Council, it was agreed to mark its position. Funds were raised from the public to pay the £300 costs, and the Monument was unveiled on 8th August 1936, where local VIPs were invited to the official opening, which was introduced by the Astronomer Royal.
The Meridian Monument marks the point on the South Coast where the Greenwich Meridian enters and exits the country and is one of several to mark the Meridian Line.

Road safety hasn’t kept pace with housebuilding. For example, in North Ward, the only full crossing is the dark subway under Pelham Rise.
Residents risk dangerous dashes across South Coast Road to reach buses and shops. Many old traffic islands are poorly placed and too narrow for prams and mobility scooters.

For many years a track was in use along part of Valley Lane, shown on the Estate Plan, leading from The Lookout to Valley Road. This stretch of track is currently obstructed at both ends.
Evidence of past usage is now being gathered with the aim of making an application to the County Council for the whole stretch to be added to the map of public rights of way and securing its reopening.

RESULTS
The results of the survey show strong interest (76%) in attending a local Repair Café, with the majority agreeing that having a Repair Café in Peacehaven is very important. 86% of respondents would bring items to be repaired, with the items being predominantly electrical appliances and clothing/textiles. Whilst it’s useful to have acquired volunteer contacts, it is also useful to have been made aware of the need to source additional volunteers, specifically repairers.
Overall, the results positively highlight the need for a Repair Café in Peacehaven.
