Voters Urged to Register Before it’s too Late

With the voter registration deadline for the East Sussex County Council elections on 7 May looming, residents wishing to vote are urged to make sure they are registered in time.

Research shows that some groups — including young people, students, and those who have recently moved home — are less likely to be registered than others.

The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Monday, 20 April. Registering online at gov.uk/register-to-vote takes just five minutes.

It is important to remember that paying Council Tax does not automatically register you to vote. Anyone unsure whether they are already registered can check online at:
www.lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk/article/3287/Am-I-registered-to-vote

Once registered, voters can choose how they want to cast their vote — in person, by post, or by appointing someone they trust to vote on their behalf, known as a proxy vote.

Anyone voting at a polling station will need to show photo ID. To find out which forms of ID are accepted, visit the Electoral Commission website at:
www.electoralcommission.org.uk

Most people already have an accepted form of photo ID and will not need to do anything further. However, anyone who does not have suitable ID can apply for free voter ID online at:
www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate

Alternatively, a paper application form can be completed and submitted to the local authority.
