Mayor’s Charity

Peacehaven Community Supermarket

Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) is a registered charity that currently connects up to 230 local families each week with food and other essential items via its Seahaven Community Food Projects. SCDA seeks to build stronger, healthier and more inclusive communities by reducing loneliness, improving health and wellbeing, and increasing economic stability. We work with people of all ages, in particular those on low incomes who need support with issues linked to poverty, food security, and social isolation.

Newhaven and Peacehaven Community Supermarkets

We provide affordable food for people in Newhaven, Peacehaven and surrounding areas who for lots of different reasons, are struggling to put food on the table. We are here to make sure everyone in our community has access to affordable, healthy and nutritious food.
Anyone is welcome, no referral is needed. To find out more, contact us or just pop in for a chat and a cup of tea!

  • Delicious homemade food in our cafe
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Welcoming and inclusive atmosphere

How does it work?

You don’t need anything to sign up as a member, just come along! Once signed up, you’ll get a membership and loyalty card to collect stamps each time you shop. When you have collected five stamps, you will receive a free shop! Each week, we offer a choice of fresh fruit and veg, tinned food, bread, hygiene items, period products and nappies.

How much does it cost?

All new members receive free support for six consecutive weeks from sign up. During this time, members are invited to meet with our Community Navigator for signposting to other services to help with finances.
After six weeks, we ask for a £3 contribution each time you come. This money goes towards the cost of supplying food and running our service, which, due to demand, costs over £100,000 per year. Each visitor receives a drink in our Community Café, as well as one of our delicious food options.

Community Café

When visiting the Community Supermarket you are welcome to also visit our Community Café.

Included for each visitor – unlimited hot or cold drinks plus a snack like our delicious fresh soup with bread or a sweet option, such as biscuits or homemade cake. If you’d like both, please make a donation of your choice.

The food services are volunteer-led. We rely heavily on food donations from our local community and local businesses to help us maintain our projects. We are particularly interested in donations of long life food items such as tinned meat and vegetables, rice, cereals and pasta. These items can be donated at the Peacehaven Town Council Building or SCDA on Denton Island during regular office hours.
